Cut:
1 Blue Center Square - 2 3/4" square
2 Red Squares 2 1/2", then cut diagonally to make 4
triangles.
Sew triangle to opposite edges of the blue square,
press. Sew triangles to remaining edges and press.
Press all seams toward triangles. The unit should
measure 3 3/4" square including seam allowances.
This is called a Square in a Square.
Cut:
4 White Squares 2 1/2" square. Mark a diagonal line
with pencil on wrong side of squares.
2 Red print Squares 4 1/2" square.
Align two matching marked white squares with
opposite corners of a red print 4 1/2" square, right
sides together. Sew together 1/4" seam on each side
of drawn lines.
Cut:
Cut apart between seams to make 2 triangle units.
Press open.
First Triangle Unit:
Align a matching white 2 1/2" square with remaining
corner of one triangle unit. Sew 1/4" seam on each
side of the drawn line.
Cut apart and press open to make 2 Flying Geese units.
Each unit should be 2 1/8" x 3 3/4" including seam
allowances.
Second Triangle Unit:
Repeat directions for first triangle unit. You should
end up with 4 Flying Geese units.
Cut 4 Blue Squares 2 1/8" square
Layout:
Lay out 1 Square in a Square unit, 4 matching Flying
Geese and 4 blue squares in three rows.
Sew together pieces in each row. Press seams toward
squares. Join rows to make a star block. Press seams
toward center. The block should measure 7" square
including the seam allowances.
